About Wilson Hardware Co.
Don Ross began working at Wilson Hardware in 1942, and bought the store at the intersection of Interstate 490 and Monroe Avenue in Rochester, NY from his father-in-law Cliff Wilson in 1948. The store was purchased by Ross’ daughter, Susanne Ross Aurand, in 1986. Susanne and her son David Aurand are the current owners/operators.
Susanne Aurand started her career as a teacher, then took a break to help her father Don out at the store in 1986. Almost 30 years later, Susanne looks back and remembers getting started in the business with no knowledge of hardware. In fact, at that time it wasn’t even common for women to shop in hardware stores, unless they were accompanying their husbands or fathers. But, Susanne listened and learned from her father, and happily reports that today almost half of the customers coming through their doors are women. Susanne has appreciated the patience and advice of her loyal customers, and prides herself and the store on providing the personal attention that only a family-owned business can provide.
Susanne’s son, Dave Aurand, entered the family business in 1980 as a mechanic trainee, and worked his way up to equipment shop manager in 1982. Aurand found his niche and took the store into the commercial chain saw market in 1985, expanding to the arborist and logger market in the 1990’s. Aurand saw a need and began serving the logger and arborist community. Wilson Hardware Co. is now a well-know presence in the professional arborist and logging industry.
